What sinus infections treatments are available

Every year, Americans pay almost $5.8 billion for sinus infection treatment. If you look around your neighborhood you would come across roughly 5 out of 10 people suffering from this problem and looking for a proper sinus infection treatment. Before getting into a detailed discussion on sinus infection treatment, let us take a look on the disease itself.

Sinus infection is basically inflammation of paranasal sinuses triggered by any bacterial, fungal or allergic activities. Many doctors prescribe antibiotics for sinus infection treatment. But the fact is without antibiotics sinus infection treatment is possible and to some extent more desirable as too much antibiotic input can generate further problems in the body. That is why people worldwide are taking more interest in alternative methods of sinus infection treatment that involves less usage of drugs.

Antihistamine, analgesic drugs like aspirin, paracetamol or ibuprofen, decongestant etc are commonly used in sinus infection treatment. These are administered to relieve the patient from headache or facial pain, fever and nasal congestion. This part of sinus infection treatment is complemented with a curative therapy that gradually cures the infection. Amoxicillin and Augmentin/Co-amoxiclav are frequently prescribed by doctors in sinus infection treatment.

Fluoroquinolones and newer macrolide antibiotics like clarithromycin are preferred by many medical practitioners in sinus infection treatment if the patients seem to have allergic tendencies to penicillins. Sometimes they also prescribe Doxycycline but less frequently.

Nasal irrigation or flush is an effective sinus infection treatment for people having acute sinusitis. Regular hypertonic saline nasal irrigation can reduce these symptoms. This is considered as an effective measure of adjunctive sinus infection treatment.

Sometimes nasal surgery is required in sinus infection treatment. When otolaryngologists or ENT specialists find the cases that cannot be effectively cured by normal methods of sinus infection treatment, they go for surgical cures. Functional Endoscopy Sinus Surgery or FESS is a recently developed surgical process that has shown remarkable results in sinus infection treatment. Here anatomical and pathological obstructions are removed to get a normal clearance of sinuses.

Balloon Sinuplasty is another advanced method of sinus infection treatment. This is quite similar to balloon angioplasty. Balloon is used to make the openings of sinuses more expanded and unclog them. There is a debate about actual effectiveness of this sinus infection treatment but still it’s considered promising.

Topical methods are also tried by many practitioners in sinus infection treatment. As fungus plays a major role in sinus, antifungal agent amphotericin B can be applied. But many trials of this method have failed to give impressive results.

Patients who do not respond to new surgical methods of sinus infection treatment are often treated by older methods like Caldwell-Luc Radical Antrostomy. At this method the wall of antrum is opened and the diseased sinus mucus is removed followed by draining the tract.

There are many natural ways of sinus infection treatment that we often try out at home before consulting any physician. Inhaling steam for 3 to 4 times a day is a good reliever of headache and facial pains. Hot steamy showers or intake of hot beverages and soups also can deliver temporary relief.
